Background and Discussion:

The Forensic Psychiatric Evaluation for Re-Entry project aims to improve reentry outcomes for incarcerated individuals by integrating comprehensive psychiatric evaluations into the reentry process. With millions cycling through local jails annually, this initiative addresses a critical gap in current reentry programs by focusing on mental health needs, risk factors, and treatment planning.

In partnership with the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program at UTHealth Houston, the project will utilize two fellows to conduct evaluations for individuals within six months of release. These evaluations will assess mental health conditions, criminogenic risks, and treatment needs, providing tailored recommendations for treatment, continuity of care, and community support.

Expected Impact:

The project’s goals are to reduce recidivism and ensure successful reintegration into society by coordinating care across jail and community services. Key deliverables include comprehensive assessments, risk and treatment plans, and follow-up strategies. Success relies on collaboration with jail staff, security clearance, and flexible scheduling for evaluations.
