Background and Discussion:

On January 31, 2023, the Commissioners Court approved the acceptance of a $25,091,359 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on behalf of Harris County Public Health to support and enhance our public health workforce, systems, and infrastructure. These funds have been earmarked to fund 30 key positions across HCPH, support workforce development needs and trainings, upgrade our electronic health records system, and invest in community-based organizations that support the social determinants of health, among other priorities.  The CDC has granted Harris County Public Health an additional $1,993,405 for projects to further address foundational capabilities that will enhance our delivery of public health services. We are asking the court’s permission to formally accept the award.

Expected Impact:

HCPH intends to utilize these additional grant funds to upgrade our electronic health records system to ensure efficiency and security in tracking patient data. In addition, these funds will allow us to contract with one of the academic institutions in Harris County to perform in-depth evaluations of key HCPH programs (including ACCESS Harris and the Community Health and Violence Prevention Services) to review our programming, identify any gaps or areas for improvement, and make recommendations on how we can better provide services to the community. These activities will help advance HCPH’s strategic directions related to improving health equity and health promotion activities.
