Background and Discussion:

Deputies participating in the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) will make enforcement of impaired

driving is their top priority. Enforcement will occur during the following holiday periods: Christmas/New Years,

Spring Break, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. The goal is to reduce crashes, fatalities, and

injuries, through high visibility enforcement and public education. The grant period for this award is December 9, 2025 - September 10, 2026.

Expected Impact:

Officers conducting enforcement on a STEP-IDM grant focus their efforts on reducing incidences of intersection-related violations, driving while intoxicated, failure to use occupant restraint systems, enforcement of state and local ordinances on cellular and texting devices and unsafe speed within the high-crash areas they identify, although any traffic-related probable cause may be used to initiate a vehicle stop. This award will fund the department for the grant term beginning December 9, 2025, through September 10, 2026. A reduction in crashes, fatalities, and injuries related to impaired driving is expected.

Alternative Options:

No known viable alternative to accomplish the goal of reducing crashes, fatalities, and injuries with grant

funded overtime.
