Background and Discussion:

The U. S. Department of Homeland Security states that acts of school and workplace violence, including both active shooter incidents and violent protests, threaten life safety and security, undermine public confidence, and emotionally devastate affected communities. Law enforcement is encouraged to develop resources that build campus resilience by preparing and responding to violent incidents.

The ALLERT curriculum has been adopted by numerous states and agencies, including Texas as its standard active shooter training.   Since 2002, the ALERRT Center at Texas State University has successfully delivered training for first responders. The Constable of Precinct 7 is seeking grant funds in the amount of $144,890.00 for the Crisis Response Program to train deputies on how to deter acts of school and workplace violence using the ALERRT curriculum provided by the ALERRT Center at Texas State University.

Expected Impact:

The expected outcome is better-trained officers with advanced knowledge of appropriate intervention strategies, improved skills during crises, and the reduction of active shooter crimes.
