Request Summary (Agenda Caption):

title

Request that the County Judge execute a Proposed Collaboration Letter in support of a Harris County Department of Education County Connections Youth Summer Initiative 2024 County Connections grant application to be submitted by Barrett Economic & Community Development Organization (BECDO) for the 2024 Barrett Summer Youth Enrichment Program Summer Camp, Precinct 3.

Background and Discussion:

Since 2000 the Barrett Station and Riley Chambers Community Centers and Riley Chambers Park have served as the location for the annual Barrett Summer Youth Enrichment Program summer camp.  This camp offers youth in and around the historic Barrett community an opportunity to continue to learn, grow, socialize, and have fun during the summer break between the regular school years.  The Proposed Collaboration Letter is required for the Harris County Department of Education County Connections Youth Summer Initiative 2024 County Connections grant application that will be submitted by BECDO.  BECDO will be the recipient of the grant if awarded.  The letter outlines the use of the Barrett Station and Riley Chambers Community Centers and Riley Chambers Park facilities for the 2024 summer camp.

Expected Impact:

This program will support youth education and the development of social, life, and leadership skills that foster success and build the foundation upon which our future leaders are raised.  The grant is a critical funding source for BECDO for summer camp.

Alternative Options:

Court could opt not to support the 2024 summer camp, which would deny the Barrett Station area youth the ability to participate in this important, long standing program.
