Background and Discussion:
Based on internal testing conducted by the Harris County Public Health - Mosquito and Vector Control Division, certain mosquito populations in Harris County have developed resistance to some of the adulticide products currently used to control mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile virus. To support ongoing evaluation of alternative mosquito control products, Clarke Mosquito Control has offered a non-monetary donation of 30 gallons of Master Mix 412 and 5 gallons of Duovex. These products will be used for preliminary field testing to assess their effectiveness against local mosquito populations. The results of this evaluation will help inform future decisions regarding the potential transition to alternative adulticide products as existing inventory is depleted, ensuring the division continues to use effective mosquito control methods to protect public health.
Expected Impact:
Acceptance of these non-monetary donations will enhance the Mosquito and Vector Control Division's ability to evaluate alternative adulticide products and respond to insecticide-resistant mosquito populations. Testing these products will help identify effective mosquito control options, supporting continued efforts to reduce mosquito populations that may transmit West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases. This evaluation will help inform future product selection and strengthen the division's ability to protect the health and safety of Harris County residents.
Alternative Options:
Other vendors have expressed a willingness to provide products for evaluation; however, Clarke Mosquito Control has offered two adulticide products of particular interest in quantities sufficient to support both preliminary testing and subsequent operational use, if deemed effective. Accepting this donation provides an opportunity to evaluate promising alternative products while also benefiting ongoing mosquito control operations at no cost to the County.
