Background and Discussion:

On February 27, 2024, the Harris County Commissioners Court approved accepting a $120,000 grant award from the National Association of County and City Health Officials on behalf of Harris County Public Health. This award, under the Improving the Health of Young Children: Increasing Vaccination Coverage through Partnerships with Early Care and Education Programs, provides funding to support partnerships with Harris County daycare centers and early child education facilities to promote vaccinations among children up to age 5.  The grant was originally set to expire on Sept. 29, 2024. HCPH is requesting that the court accept this amendment to extend the award period to May 31, 2025, which will allow Public Health to continue utilizing unspent award funds for grassroots community events and media outreach campaigns on child vaccinations.

Expected Impact:

This grant award helps HCPH fulfill its Health Promotions strategic goal by enhancing outreach efforts to improve the health of Harris County's youngest residents and counteract vaccine misinformation. In addition, the grant funds have helped HCPH promote the relaunch of its Immunization Program, which began providing services again to the community in September after a 10-year hiatus.

Alternative Options:

If we do not proceed, HCPH will forfeit about $60,000 in unused funds from original the grant award.
