Background and Discussion:

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) received funding to initiate Maternal Mental Health Services in FY23 awarded by Substance and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The vendor for this contract is Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) Doula. In efforts to address maternal mortality/morbidity rates in Harris County, HCPH intends to add capacity to local community members to be trained as Doulas. HCPH has allocated CAPPA an amount of $25,500 to fund the doula education of 10 individuals in the track of full-spectrum doula with additional perinatal mood disorder assessment training.

Expected Impact:

• Full-spectrum trained doulas provide emotional support, advocacy, comfort during labor, and assess effects of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

• Accessible doula training ensures county residents have culturally competent providers attuned to their needs and lived experiences.

• This approach supports efforts to address and reduce maternal morbidity and mortality rates in Harris County.
