Background and Discussion:

A duck nesting box is a man-made structure that provides a safe place for ducks to nest. They can help increase local populations of ducks and other birds, especially in areas where natural nesting sites are scarce.

Ducks, like the black-bellied whistling ducks that frequent the park, typically build their nests in tree cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes. However, in many areas, these ducks have difficulty finding suitable natural nesting sites.

Expected Impact:

The nesting boxes provide a place for the black-bellied whistling ducks to safely nest, as well as an opportunity to educate the public about this species’ unique habits and conservation needs. This project is beneficial to John Paul Landing Park as it provides an opportunity to increase the duck population in the nature reserve.

Alternative Options:

If the boxes are not provided, the ducks will have to find an alternative location to build their nests, possibly in an area that is more hostile and dangerous to the birds.
