Background and Discussion:

This project consists of the construction of approximately 11,400 linear feet of 6-foot-wide sidewalks along north and south Woodforest Boulevard.  The project limits are from Redstone Street to Freeport Street.

This change order includes the following:

-                     While removing the existing ramp at the intersection of Castlebar Court and Woodforest Boulevard, the contractor uncovered a sinkhole caused by erosion of the soil beneath the roadway.  The affected areas measure approximately 4 x 3 feet and 6 x 4 feet where soil has been washed out.  The engineer of record has recommended the use of flowable fill to restore the stability of the roadway and address the underlying erosion.  This change order will add $1,800.00 to the contract with no additional days.

-                     Due to the shortage of 5-inches Cedar Elm trees and the significant cost increase associated with sourcing them from out of state, it has been decided to use an alternative tree species.  The engineer of record recommends substituting with Live Oak trees to maintain project timelines and budget.  This change order will add $8,106.00 to the contract with no additional days.

-                     The existing walkway is made of exposed aggregate concrete, chosen for its durability and resilience, particularly in response to Houston’s high rainfall and the surrounding tree coverage.  To ensure uniformity and preserve the aesthetic and functional qualities of the sidewalk, it has been agreed that using the same material for repairs is the most appropriate solution.  This approach will maintain consistency with the existing walkway and avoid potential issues that could arise from using a different concrete finish.  This change order will add $480.00 to the contract with an additional 3 days.

Expected Impact:

Increase the cost and adding additional days to the contract time.

Alternative Options:

No action will result in substandard construction.
