Background and Discussion: The District plants between 12,000 and 15,000 trees annually on District rights-of-way across Harris County. Trees are planted to fulfill construction permitting and mitigation requirements on District projects.  The District has planted more than 300,000 trees over the past 20 years of this program.

Expected Impact: Approval of this contract renewal will allow the District to continue to plant and maintain 12,000 and 15,000 trees each year.  Trees provide community-wide benefits including reducing air and noise pollution, water conservation and wildlife protection and increase the beauty of urban areas.  Trees also reduce mowing maintenance by shading out undesirable fast-growing weeds and help reduce erosion while also improving water infiltration and reducing storm water run-off.

Alternative Options: Alternative options include choosing not to continue the tree planting program.  The District would have to pursue alternative methods to plant the trees required for the permitting and mitigation of projects.  This includes the hiring of additional personnel and the purchase of equipment to complete these projects.
