Request Summary (Agenda Caption):
title
Request by the Sheriff’s Office for approval to submit an application to the Texas Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority for grant funds in the amount of $1,970,600, with a required cash match of $394,122, and an in-kind match of $1,645,528 for FY27 Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority (MVCPA) Task Force Grant for the Auto Theft Unit Program.
end
Background and Discussion:
The Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority (MVCPA) is authorized in statute to provide grants to local law enforcement to combat motor vehicle theft, burglary from a motor vehicle and/or fraud-related motor vehicle crime. This is a total program budget reimbursement grant. Applicants that are awarded grants will expend local (agency) funds and then will be reimbursed quarterly, subject to compliance with standard and special conditions as contained in the Statement of Grant Award (SGA), at the agreed rate for all allowable, reasonable, and necessary program costs incurred.
This grant would provide funding for the Sheriff’s Auto Theft Unit during the period of September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027.
Expected Impact:
This grant would provide funding for the Auto Theft Unit to continue combatting motor vehicle burglary, motor vehicle theft, and fraud-related motor vehicle crime and continue participation with the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority which fosters a statewide collaborative network amongst auto theft units.
Alternative Options:
If we do not apply for this grant, Harris County would forfeit the opportunity to receive funding for the Sheriff’s Auto Theft Unit.
