Background and Discussion:

The overall goal of this program is to increase occupant restraint use in all passenger vehicles and trucks by conducting an intense occupant protection enforcement and public information and education effort during the enforcement period. The STEP-CIOT enforcement period is approximately two weeks in late May and early June, focused on state and national outreach efforts to increase seatbelt and child passenger safety seat use. The grant period for this award is May 15, 2026 through June 3, 2026.

Expected Impact:

Reduction of automobile crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Harris County through focused enforcement efforts on reducing failure to use occupant restraint systems within high-crash areas identified by applicants through data analysis making Harris County safter and just.

Alternative Options:

Not accepting this grant would forfeit the opportunity to receive funding to protect the citizens on Harris County roads.
