Request by the Sheriff’s Office for approval to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Justice/Community Oriented Policing Services for grant funds in the amount of $200,000, with no required cash match, for the FY26 Community Policing Development: Microgrants Combating Human Trafficking Project.

Background and Discussion:

The project would fund overtime for the Human Trafficking Unit and provide opportunities for specialized training. The overtime would primarily be used to conduct proactive and joint investigations. The training budget would allow personnel to attend annual conferences held by the International Association of Human Trafficking Investigators as well as Undercover Operations Training courses.

Expected Impact:

If awarded, the funds would enhance the Human Trafficking Unit’s operational effectiveness by providing overtime for proactive and joint investigations. The award would also provide specialized training opportunities for sworn personnel assigned to the unit. The award would increase the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to combat human trafficking within Harris County.

Alternative Options:

If our agency does not apply for this grant, the Sheriff’s Office would forfeit the opportunity to receive funds to support the fight against human trafficking within Harris County.
