Background and Discussion:

The ARPA Steering Committee previously approved $3.0 million for the Civic Art Initiative to allow Precincts to implement public art in the identified CPTED priority communities. Each community was allocated $272,727. Precinct 1 convened a workgroup across multiple divisions to develop project proposals for Sunnyside and Cypress Station.

Precinct 1 neighborhoods and associated projects include:

•                     Sunnyside - freestanding mosaic, mini murals, sculpture, transit stops and sidewalk poetry.

•                     Cypress Station - pedestrian lighting with banners, sidewalk poetry, crosswalk ark, and creative sports court.

Expected Impact: The improvements will enhance the built environment of the identified neighborhoods and make public spaces more appealing, functional, or accessible through the incorporation of artwork. Civic art utilizes visual arts and culture to shape a place's physical and social character, spurring economic development and promoting enduring social change.
