Background and Discussion:

Harris County Public Health’s Tuberculosis Elimination Program provides medical treatment, comprehensive nurse case management, and prevention services Harris County residents. The program aims to reduce the spread of Tuberculosis by using patient-centered, evidence-based practices for prevention, detection, treatment, and education. HCPH is requesting the court's permission to apply for a cooperative agreement offering the TB Elimination Services Program funding over five years of performance while supporting opportunities to build upon local, state, and national partnerships and strengthen the capacity of our workforce and laboratory services.

Expected Impact:

Entering into a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will result in significant and sustainable financial support for the Tuberculosis Elimination Program, allowing for additional program staff and increasing the number of TB diagnoses, cases managed, contact investigations, and infection control measures occurring countywide. In addition, the program will benefit from Human Resource Development and Laboratory strengthening activities offered through the cooperative agreement to increase its capacity to diagnose and treat high-risk populations with cultural sensitivity and advanced technology. This approach is anticipated to decrease the incidence of TB countywide, especially amongst populations at the highest risk, resulting in increased health equity related to TB testing and treatment strategies, decreased TB mortality, and notable contributions by Harris County to eliminate TB nationwide.
