Background and Discussion:

The Welcoming the World: Southwest Houston Cultural Arts Strategy will promote cultural tourism and economic development in Gulfton, Sharpstown, and Alief. . The effort will establish geographic boundaries of prospective districts through targeted public engagement and identify strategies to achieve cultural arts district designation--serving as a critical tool  to leverage cultural assets , expand placemaking and public art interventions, and encourage tourism into culturally rich communities. Within the Gulfton area, the recommendations will support culturally unique businesses that can support the community’s larger social and economic goals. It will also include placemaking and district branding strategies that tell the story of residents and present a united message to visitors. At the site-specific level at Burnett Bayland Park, the strategy will be activated through a series of permanent and temporary art installations that will attract tourists and visitors to Precinct 4 Parks and Southwest Houston.

Expected Impact:

Increased awareness of cultural assets within the SW Houston area leading to more interest from tourists within the region and beyond.
