Background and Discussion:

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to promote public safety, reduce crime, and improve the criminal justice system.  The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences Crime Laboratory seeks funding to achieve two goals: (1) purchase a TopMatch-3D Versa Scanner to increase the capacity of the Firearms Identification Laboratory to analyze damaged bullets and bullet fragments and (2) provide overtime for firearms analysis to reduce backlogs and turnaround times.

Expected Impact:

This program would benefit the ability of the firearms laboratory to reduce backlogs and turnaround of evidence in case involving firearms.

Alternative Options:

There are few, if any, alternative options for this program.
