Project Description:

This project is to purchase a building at 17280 West Lake Houston Parkway and build out the interior in order to create a new community center for Precinct 3. This property is adjacent to and abuts Precinct 3’s Atascocita Park, and the precinct will connect the Community Center to the park’s trail network to allow for greater access to both the park and the community center. This will be similar to how our Riley Chambers, Crosby Park, and Dennis Johnson Park operate.  While not a part of the initial building development, there are plans to install a generator in the near future so that the community center can be used as a cooling/warming center during regular hours both after a disaster and throughout the year. The community center may also be used for distributing supplies after a disaster.

Justification & Alternatives:

This project will fill the need for a community center in this area.  Currently, there are no county facilities to serve the constituents in this neighborhood. It’s a cost-saving option by purchasing the existing building and remodeling it. Having a community center in this neighborhood will help enhance public safety by providing a place for cooling/warming or distributing supplies after a disaster.  The cost to find a green-field location and design/build a new facility would be much higher.
