Background and Discussion:

The Fire Code Amendment revisions are targeted, service-driven updates that support businesses opening, rebuilding, or currently operating in unincorporated Harris County. These refinements align our code with national best practices, recent state legislation, and current fire and life safety standards while keeping requirements clear, concise, and predictable. Key changes include standardizing permit definitions for consistency, enabling early intervention on closed, vacated, unsafe properties to protect occupants and neighbors, and requiring modern in-building emergency communication systems.

The revisions have included review by our office, partners such as Harris County Universal Services, Harris County Engineering, Harris County Public Health, County Attorney’s Office, as well as other code experts/design professional, state agencies, and local jurisdictions.

Expected Impact:

Alignment of code with best practices and legislative changes.
