Background and Discussion:

Harris County Resources for Children and Adults has recently been approved for funding from SAMHSA for AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) Harris Project for the development of a tiered prevention, intervention and treatment program which includes universal prevention and mental health promotion, brief intervention services as well as tertiary intervention and behavioral health treatment, based on the needs of school aged children and youth in the participating school districts.  This project is a collaboration among HCRCA, Texas Education Agency, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Region 4 Educational Service Center, Harris Center for Mental Health & IDD (local mental health authority), Channelview ISD, Sheldon ISD, Spring ISD (local education agencies) and Mental Health America of Greater Houston. Mental Health America (MHA) of Greater Houston will provide local, evidence-based trainings to educators, administrators, school mental health professionals, community-based partners, and parents/guardians in all three school districts.

Expected Impact:

With this ILA, it is expected that there will be an increase in mental health awareness and literacy, trauma informed and culturally inclusive evidence-based practices which will lead to increased mental health awareness and early identification of student mental health needs that ultimately promote school engagement and functioning.
