Background and Discussion:

A “Chimney Swift Tower” is typically a human-made, stand-alone chimney-like structure built and intended exclusively as a roosting and nesting site for Chimney Swifts. The project involves constructing a 12-foot wooden tower atop an existing 2-foot metal stand, creating a 14-foot-tall structure for these migratory birds. The tower will consist of an inner grooved T1-11 siding layer, a middle layer of rigid insulation, and a pre-painted outer siding. The existing rusted metal stand and its base door will be cleaned but not replaced. Scaffolding is required to ensure adult volunteers can safely complete the top sections, and predator prevention measures such as roof flashing will be added to protect the birds and prevent rain damage.

Expected Impact:

The tower provides a place for Chimney Swifts to roost and nest as well as an opportunity to educate the public about this species’ unique habits and conservation needs. This project is beneficial to Kleb Woods Nature Preserve as the old Chimney Swift Tower had rotted and was removed.

Alternative Options:

If a new tower is not installed, the Chimney Swifts will not have a place to nest in the park when they migrate to our area from South America in March.
