Background and Discussion:

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office would like to request the following new positions: 3 Detention Captains, 6 Detention Lieutenants, 20 Detention Sergeants, 100 Detention Officers, and 2 Certified Lieutenants. The total cost for this request will be about $6.9M.

Expected Impact:

Adding these positions will help improve safety and security for both inmates and staff in the jail as inmates are being brought back from outsourced locations and should facilitate further reductions in overtime spending.

Alternative Options:

Continue operating at current staffing levels, which will create an unsafe environment as inmates are brought back from outsourced locations.

County Strategic Plan Goal:  1. Make Harris County safer and more just.

County Strategic Plan Objective: C: Improve safety and health conditions in the jail.
