Request for approval to accept an agreement with the U.S. Green Building Council, Inc. to participate in the LEED for Cities Certification Cohort Program.

Background and Discussion:
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has served as a green building and sustainable development resource to local governments since the founding of the non-profit organization. Through the LEED for Cities Certification Cohort Program, USGBC convenes local governments in an accelerator program to deliver targeted solutions and support to cities and counties in a trusted peer to peer learning community.
The LEED for Cities rating system was built by and for local governments pursuing a more resilient future. It is intended to serve as a roadmap and guide for local efforts while accelerating progress at the jurisdictional scale. An independent, third-party verification provides transparency and accountability toward sustainability and climate commitments. LEED for Cities provides a baseline assessment of where local governments are currently - addressing topics as diverse as natural resource protection, resilience planning, renewable energy, land use planning, public health, economic growth, material recovery, and more. Over 100 U.S. local governments, representing over 40 million people, have participated in the LEED for Cities Certification Cohort to date.
Expected Impact:
With Harris County participating in this cohort, the County will gain insight into common metrics and benchmarks that local governments use to measure environmental performance and sustainability, which will support the Strategic Plan’s measurable results and community indicators work as well as other climate planning efforts.
Alternative Options:
To not accept the agreement and not participate in the cohort.
