title

Request by the Commissioner of Precinct 1 that the County Judge execute an agreement with Emancipation Park Conservancy to sponsor a Juneteenth observance.

Background and Discussion:

Commissioner Precinct 1 wishes to honor and observe Juneteenth 2024 through a collaboration with the Emancipation Park Conservancy that will include the organization and delivery of panels and forums advancing equity, opportunity, and justice through sessions on topics such as public health, economic opportunity, safety, and justice. In addition, a Family Fun Day, a concert, and a fun run are also planned as part of the activities. The Precinct will provide funding and staff support, in exchange for which the Precinct will be recognized as a sponsor of the observance. In addition, both the Precinct and the Emancipation Park Conservancy will work together to encourage participation of Precinct One residents, particularly seniors, in the observance activities.

Expected Impact:

The observance will serve multiple purposes: reminding some and educating others about Juneteenth, its history, and its place in the story of Houston and Harris County; providing constituents, and in particular seniors, with practical information on issues such as health; and offering a communal opportunity to celebrate a holiday with unique roots in the Houston-Galveston Gulf Coast area.
