Background and Discussion:

Existing sheet piles in Channel E100-00-00 adjacent to Championship Park near University of Houston Downtown and in W100-00-00 adjacent to Sesquicentennial Park by the Wortham Theater are experiencing corrosion due to aging cathodic protection systems.  This project will upgrade and enhance the existing system to protect the sheet piles from further degradation. The project scope includes installing new deep well anode beds, anode sleds within both bayous, new or repaired rectifiers outside of the bayous and repairing holes and cracks in the existing sheet piles.

This infrastructure maintenance work will be executed as a result of the passage of the “Maintenance Matters” Proposition in November 2024.

Expected Impact:

The intent of this contract is to repair the cathodic protection system that protects the sheet piles in both White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou and to repair corrosion damage to the sheet piles so they may continue to provide the bank protection, and channel flows they were originally designed and installed to do.

Alternative Options:

The alternative is not to do the project, but that would result in continued degradation of the existing sheet piles next to significant existing structures.
