Background and Discussion:

The African American Cultural Heritage Commission (AACHC), established in 2020 by Commissioners Court, currently consists of five (5) appointed members tasked with advising the Court on matters related to preservation, recognition, and education surrounding African American heritage in Harris County. Since its formation, the Commission has played a critical role in highlighting and safeguarding the contributions of African American communities to the county’s history and identity.

Expected Impact:

•                     Aligns the Commission’s structure more closely with peer cultural commissions in Harris County.

•                     Enhances capacity for research, outreach, and historic preservation efforts

•                     Promotes equitable representation for the 18.5% of Harris County residents who identify as African American

•                     Expands opportunities for community engagement and diverse perspectives

Alternative Options:

The Board composition remains the same.
