Background and Discussion:
The Community Supervision Unit provides alternatives to incarceration for parents sentenced in the family district courts. Over 95% of parents on community supervision are fathers. Many fathers have not regularly exercised access or possession of their children due to various barriers. In addition, these fathers have not participated in various rights and duties related to their children. ProFathering15 is an interactive and engaging online program that focuses on building dads' skills in fathering, parenting, and healthy relationships. ProFathering15 builds the skills of any dad with fatherhood topics relevant to any dad. The program is online and available in English and Spanish and is offered at no cost to Harris County.
Expected Impact:
Generally, children benefit from financial and emotional support from both parents. The free class will cover various topics, including being a dad; handling emotions; grief and loss; health; coparenting; fathering skills; child development; child discipline; work-family balance; managing money; and more. Statistics demonstrate that dads play a critical role in the success of their children.
This online program will encourage fathers to take an active and sustained role in the lives of their children.
