Request for approval to host the Harm Reduction Workshop on April 10, 2025 in the total amount of $59,585.
end
Background and Discussion:
The purpose of the Harm Reduction Workshop is to enhance understanding of substance use disorders (SUDs) as medical conditions influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. It focuses on promoting harm reduction strategies, including Naloxone (Narcan) administration, safe disposal of drug paraphernalia, and referral to treatment services. Participants will be trained to reduce stigma by engaging with individuals affected by substance use in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner, fostering trust and improving access to care. The workshop also strengthens community impact by equipping participants to bridge the justice system and healthcare/social services, ensuring individuals receive appropriate care. It highlights how harm reduction and substance use prevention align with public safety objectives, improving community well-being and reducing repeat incidents of misuse and overdose. Collaboration among public safety professionals, healthcare providers, and community organizations is emphasized to create a unified approach to substance use prevention. This workshop balances public safety priorities with effective strategies for addressing substance use and supporting affected individuals.
Expected Impact:
The workshop improves understanding of substance use disorders (SUDs) as medical conditions shaped by biological, psychological, and social factors, while promoting harm reduction strategies like Naloxone (Narcan) administration and safe disposal to reduce risks and improve treatment access. Participants will learn to engage compassionately with individuals affected by substance use, reducing stigma and improving care, while also bridging the justice system and healthcare/social services to ensure appropriate support.
Alternative Options:
If this workshop is not approved, we risk being out of compliance with the grant work plan, which mandates hosting workshops and educational sessions focused on the three key areas outlined in the grant. These areas-overdose prevention, harm reduction, and linkage to care-are essential for fulfilling the objectives of the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A)-Local grant. Non-compliance may result in the inability to meet performance requirements, jeopardizing funding and the continuation of critical initiatives designed to address the overdose crisis.
