Background and Discussion:

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) aims to increase access to its Mobile Health Services and Programs among priority communities. To achieve this goal, HCPH will host four or more Wellness on Wheels events per fiscal year, one per precinct starting in FY2024. Harris County Public Health (HCPH) and The Common Market will collaborate to deliver farm fresh boxes and bulk foods from small and family-owned farms to communities in need at no cost, enhancing food security and promoting public health.

Expected Impact:

Having the Common Market provide farm-fresh boxes at the Wellness on Wheels event will promote access to healthy, locally sourced produce among community members with limited access to fresh foods. This can contribute to improved nutrition and overall health outcomes, particularly in areas considered food deserts or where affordable, nutritious options are scarce. Showcasing farm-fresh foods at the Wellness on Wheels Event can raise awareness about sustainable agriculture practices and support local farmers, fostering a sense of community pride. Distributing food boxes at the event and nutrition education will create opportunities for social interaction and community engagement.
