Background and Discussion:
Harris County Public Library (HCPL) seeks to bridge the digital divide by expanding access to reliable broadband infrastructure, modern technology, and private technology-enabled spaces that support education, workforce development, and health-related services throughout Harris County.
As part of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) Library Infrastructure Facility Improvement (LIFI) Grant, HCPL is implementing a countywide initiative to enhance digital access by improving broadband connectivity at designated library locations and refreshing technology across the library system. The project also includes the procurement and installation of privacy pods at selected library branches to provide patrons with secure, private spaces for activities such as telehealth appointments, virtual job interviews, online education, certification testing, workforce training, remote work, and other broadband-enabled services requiring privacy and minimal distractions.
Expected Impact:
The privacy pods are intended to create comfortable, accessible, and technology-ready environments that support the growing demand for confidential virtual services while expanding equitable access to digital resources for Harris County residents. Each pod will be equipped with a workstation and seating and will be integrated into existing library spaces with minimal disruption to library operations.
