Background and Discussion:
The Hardy Toll Road Sam Houston Parkway Direct Connector Projects will ultimately provide eight (8) direct connectors to improve freeway access between the two roadways. The construction of these direct connectors will accommodate the high volumes of traffic anticipated between Sam Houston Parkway (Beltway 8) and the Hardy Toll Road safely. The current connection between roadways, maintained by TxDOT, is depressed and floods in large rain events. Grade separated direct connectors between corridors offer the greatest efficiency, safety, capacity, and mobility for the traveling public. Phase I of the project will add three (3) new direct connectors to the existing eastbound to northbound direct connector, completing the western half of the interchange. The remaining direct connectors will be constructed in the future when warranted by traffic demands. Acquisition of additional right-of-way (ROW) is necessary to accommodate the three (3) new direct connectors. The ROW to be acquired is a mix of industrial and commercial properties located along East and West Hardy Hardy Roads and along the Beltway 8 eastbound frontage road.
Expected Impact:
This project aligns with Harris County’s goals of providing accessible, affordable, equitable, reliable, safe, and sustainable transportation options and networks to facilitate efficient movement of people and goods throughout the region.
