Background and Discussion:
Harris County Community Department’s Office of Transit Services has funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) available for construction of the La Porte Sidewalk Improvement Phase III project which consists of the purpose of planning and designing, installing new crosswalks, demolition and replacement of sidewalks, pavement marking, street signage, ADA compliant push-button and wheelchair ramps, program costs for DEEO wage compliance.
The project is divided into five segments within the City of La Porte, Texas: 1) The installation of new crosswalks and signage at San Jacinto Street and Park Avenue, 2) the installation of four ADA compliant pedestrian push-buttons that include thermoplastic pavement markings and wheelchair ramps at Main Street and Broadway Street, 3) the widening and improving of the sidewalks at S. Broadway Street between W. Fairmont Parkway and C Street, 4) replacing damaged sidewalks, non-compliant ADA ramps and installing new sidewalks in both directions at Luella Blvd. (Oakhaven Rd. to Spencer Hwy.), and 5) the installation of new sidewalk and replacing damaged sidewalk and non-compliant ADA ramps at Spencer Hwy. (Farrington Blvd. to SH 146) within the City of La Porte, Texas.
Expected Impact:
The Sidewalk Improvements will provide barrier free mobility and safe access to transit bus stops for disabled, elderly, and working individuals in La Porte, Texas. Harris County is devoting $1,286,022.63 in FTA 5307 and $302,593.56 in TDC MATCH (FTA 5307) grant funds for a total of $1,588,616.19 for this project.
Alternative Options:
Without assistance from Harris County, the City of La Porte, Texas would not be able to implement sidewalk improvements within one-half mile of transit bus stops, resulting in a lost opportunity to provide and improve access to transit services within Harris County.
