Background and Discussion:

The County has received funding from this grant program since 2002. This grant provides grantees with the resources required for implementation of the National Preparedness System and working toward the National Preparedness Goal of a secure and resilient nation. This grant is funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security via the Office of the Governor, Homeland Security Grants Division and includes a suite of risk-based grants to assist state, local, tribal and territorial efforts in preventing, protecting against, mitigating, responding to and recovering from acts of terrorism and other threats related to interoperable communications.

Expected Impact:

If accepted, the County will utilize the approximate residual balance of $427,305 of Urban Area Security Initiative funds for the Cybersecurity award, which will impact the County's ability to provide cyber threat-related gap hardening of the regional radio network to assist public safety entities in communications risk mitigation and provide cyber protection planning for the radio system.

Alternative Options:

Without this funding the County would need to find alternate funding, possibly utilize general funds, to maintain a robust Homeland Security Program.
