title
Request for approval of a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Heart Association, Inc. to distribute self-monitoring blood pressure kits to participants enrolled in the Harris County Public Health Maternal and Child Health Program.
end
Background and Discussion:
In January 2025, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) was selected as an awardee of the American Heart Association's MomRx Program, which provides self-monitoring blood pressure kits to help reduce the risk of preeclampsia in expectant mothers. As part of the home visitation model and care coordination plan, HCPH Maternal and Child Health (MCH) direct service staff will distribute these kits to enrolled participants, enhancing the program’s impact in addressing the maternal mortality crisis in Harris County. Additionally, the MomRx Program will facilitate access to healthy foods as part of the agreement.
Expected Impact:
This agreement aims to enhance maternal outcomes by reducing the risk of hypertensive disorders, including preeclampsia, a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Through the integration of blood pressure monitoring into the home visitation model and care coordination plan, participants will receive timely support and education on managing their cardiovascular health. Early detection and intervention can prevent complications, improve maternal and fetal health, and reduce the need for emergency medical care. Additionally, the MomRx Program will expand access to healthy foods, addressing key social determinants of health that contribute to poor pregnancy outcomes. By leveraging this partnership, HCPH will strengthen its efforts to combat the maternal mortality crisis in Harris County, improve health equity, and support long-term well-being for mothers and their families.
