Request Summary (Agenda Caption):
title
Request for approval of a subrecipient agreement with African American Male Wellness Agency in the amount of $1,021,896.04 to provide opioid prevention services and education for the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) grant program.
end
Background and Discussion:
African American Male Wellness Agency was selected based on the surveillance data showing a significant increase in opioid-related deaths among Black non-Hispanic residents in Harris County, particularly among adult males, who were 2.6 times more likely to die from substance-involved events. With a strong community presence and a history of collaboration with Overdose to Action (OD2A), African American Male Wellness Agency implements a grassroots approach that targets high-risk areas through direct support services, including recovery coaching and naloxone distribution. Harris County Public Health (HCPH) will provide data support, tracking, and technical assistance to ensure effective, targeted interventions.
Expected Impact:
Strengthening linkages to care within Harris County is a chief task of the Overdose Data to Action grant. The approval of this subaward will allow HCPH to accomplish this task by provide funding to African American Male Wellness Agency to support and engage vulnerable communities in the targeted zip codes to reduce stigma, connect resources, and improve health outcomes. This subaward also allows HCPH to expand African American Male Wellness Agency grassroot wraparound services into Harris County.
Alternative Options:
Court could choose not to accept the contract award which may interrupt overdose preventions and harm reduction services to the residents of Harris County and staffing to support grant activities.
