Request Summary (Agenda Caption):
title
Request for approval to submit an application for the U.S. Department of Justice recognition and partial accreditation program at no cost to the County to enhance the County Library’s qualifications as a resource provider for its Citizenship and Naturalization classes and allow the Library to be recognized as a trusted partner assisting County residents in pursuing Citizenship.
end
Background and Discussion: U.S. Citizenship offers many benefits unavailable to non-citizens. Over 300,000 lawful permanent residents of Harris County are eligible to become U.S. citizens. Harris County Public Library, working with the Harris County Community Services Department and other community partners, is participating in a 3-year initiative spearheaded by the Houston Endowment that will assist eligible residents through the naturalization process with civic education classes, naturalization interview preparation, and connecting them with community partners who can legally assist them with the citizenship application process. The recognition and subsequent partial accreditation applications seeks to strengthen our department's credentials as a leading resource on the topic of Citizenship and Naturalization. County Library or its employees will not represent individuals before the government.
Expected Impact: Becoming a recognized and accredited trusted community partner will allow the County Library to continue relationships with Harris County residents seeking Citizenship services while providing helpful resources concerning the application process.
Alternative Options: The library could not become a trusted partner offering resources through existing citizenship programs.
