Background and Discussion:

Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has agreed to partner with Harris County Sheriff’s Office to offer a two-year affiliation agreement to offer Law Enforcement and First Responders Track pre-doctoral internship placement for the period of July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2027.

This internship track appears to be the first of its kind in the country. A psychology intern has obtained a master’s degree in their field, has completed or is close to completing their doctoral dissertation, and is in the last year of training before obtaining a doctorate degree in psychology. The internship is an extremely competitive APA accredited 12-month full-time position. The intern is an employee of BCM who receives a salary plus benefits through BCM. The intern will be with HCSO four days per week as part of the internship experience. The internship might provide a pipeline for future employees and create goodwill for the county. The intern Hope Marceaux will be selected for the July 01, 2025, to June 30, 2026, term.

Expected Impact:

Harris County Sheriff’s Office psychologists will supervise the intern while on site, but BCM bares the full cost to employ and provide benefits to the intern. The intern’s no cost to the county labor does not jeopardize future staffing nor does it have a significant fiscal impact on the county.
