Background and Discussion:
The Safe School Commission was established by Commissioners Court as an ad-hoc advisory group in June 2022. The commission was charged with developing recommendations on how the Court could support all 25 Independent School Districts’ and Private Schools’ safety strategies in time for the 2022-2023 school year. The Court reappointed members and re-launched the commission during the 2023-2024 school year and, in June of this year, extended the appointment terms of commission members beyond the 2023-2024 school year and through December 31, 2024.
Expected Impact:
Adoption of the bylaws will re-establish the commission as a standing commission of Harris County to allow the commission to continue to review, work, and develop recommendations year-round related to school safety strategies, in consultation and coordination with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, Harris County Department of Education, and the Region 4 Education Service Center. The bylaws also increase the size of the commission from five to seven members. The additional two seats will be reserved for two local high school students, as recommended by the commission.
