Background and Discussion:

The transformation of Telge Road is essential as it transitions from a rural route to a busy corridor accommodating both residential and commercial traffic. Originally constructed in 1953 for a significantly smaller population, the road now serves nearly 15,000 daily commuters and struggles to meet modern demands. With outdated infrastructure, hazardous intersections, and frequent flooding, the road has become prone to accidents and closures, posing risks to drivers and hindering the region’s growth.

The planned reconstruction of Telge Road from FM 2920 to SH 99 will improve mobility, safety, and economic growth while alleviating persistent congestion. The project includes upgrading the road to a modern, four-lane divided boulevard with enhanced intersections, wider lanes, and advanced drainage systems. More than just an expansion, this transformation will create a multimodal corridor, incorporating sidewalks and shared-use paths to improve community connectivity.

Expected Impact:

The submission of this project application will allow Harris County to address congestion, accessibility, connectivity, economic competitiveness, resiliency, and reduction in flooding, and improved safety on Telge Road corridor in a continuously growing area.

Alternative Options:

To not apply for the FY 2025 BUILD Grant and pursue the proposed project with local funding.
