Background and Discussion:

Precinct 4 seeks approval to donate approximately 22 pallets of MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) packages approaching the end of their optimal shelf life to Houston Food Bank. MREs are pre-packaged, shelf-stable meals available to individuals and families facing food insecurity or who are displaced due to a natural disaster.

Houston Food Bank receives and distributes MREs as a part of its disaster preparedness and recovery efforts, where shelf-stable meals are crucial for providing immediate sustenance when regular food supply chains are disrupted.

Donation of MREs serve a public purpose to support Harris County residents during disasters and emergencies. The approximate value of each pallet is $1,000, for a total approximate donated value of $22,000.

Expected Impact: N/A

Donation includes approximately 22 pallets of MREs, for distribution to County residents facing food insecurity or who are displaced due to a natural disaster.

Alternative Options:

If donation to Houston Food Bank is not approved, Precinct 4 can explore distribution to Harris County Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) or to cities within unincorporated Harris County for ongoing disaster response efforts.
