Background and Discussion:

The Women, Infants, and Children Grant is awarded annually with a fiscal year beginning October 1 through September 30. The Women, Infants, and Children Program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support and education, supplemental foods, and referrals to social service programs to eligible participants. Typical expenses include, salaries, temporary staff, fees and services, supplies, rent for lease payments, etc.

Expected Impact:

Since its beginning in 1974, the Women, Infants, and Children Program has earned the reputation of being one of the most successful federally funded nutrition programs in the United States. Studies have the found Women, Infants, and Children Program to have a positive effect on children’s diet and diet-related outcomes such as an increase in diet nutrient density, improved infant feeding practices, improved cognitive development, and improved rates of childhood immunization of patients who participate in the program.

Alternative Options:

This program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support and education, supplemental foods, and referrals to social service programs for over 40,000 Harris County residents every month. There are no alternatives for this program due to its size and scope.
