Background and Discussion:

The purpose of this memorandum of understanding with Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is to share syndromic surveillance data with Harris County Public Health. DSHS operates the Texas Syndromic Surveillance (TxS2) system, and this agreement would allow HCPH to access electronic health data and conduct disease surveillance to protect public health.

Expected Impact:

Access to the TxS2 system will provide HCPH with the ability to identify signs and symptoms of disease in the population, including identifying and responding to naturally occurring diseases such as influenza and food-borne illness; detecting and mitigating the effects of terrorist incidents; and serving other public health uses consistent with applicable law.
