Background and Discussion:

The Houston Food Bank (HFB) is a key partner in Harris County’s efforts to reduce food insecurity, particularly in communities with limited access to nutritious food. HFB operates a large distribution network that supplies fresh and shelf-stable foods to residents through community organizations, schools, and other local partners. Their established infrastructure and capacity allow them to manage high-volume distribution and maintain operations during emergencies or periods of increased demand.

This contract supports HFB’s ongoing work to source, store, and distribute food to high-need areas and aligns with Harris County Public Health’s goals to improve nutrition access and advance health equity. Continued partnership ensures that critical food resources remain stable and available to residents as the County continues addressing long-term impacts of COVID-19 and related economic challenges.

Expected Impact:

The proposed contract will continue to strengthen food access for residents in high-need areas of Harris County by supporting the Houston Food Bank’s ability to distribute fresh and shelf-stable foods efficiently and consistently. By maintaining necessary storage, transportation, and distribution capacity, HFB will be able to sustain reliable food delivery to thousands of households experiencing food insecurity. This investment also supports the County’s broader public health equity goals by improving access to nutritious foods, reducing barriers for vulnerable communities, and enhancing the region’s ability to respond to future emergencies or periods of increased demand. Overall, the contract helps ensure that residents continue to receive essential nutrition support through a well-established and high-performing partner.
