Background and Discussion:
The Office of the County Engineer has requested to re-engage with the structural engineer to provide design phase documents for the demolition of the 1301 Franklin Street Building located at 1301 Franklin Street, Houston, TX 77002. This 13-story building plus a full basement consists of a cast-in-place concrete structure with a brick exterior. It is approximately 811,079 SF and is currently minimally occupied with stored items. It was building in 1980 as has ceased functioning as a jail in 2003. This project has been on hold since 2000 and should we not move forward with this court action, it would further delay the design and potentially require additional funding for designs due to code changes.
Expected Impact:
The demolition project will allow for a future facility to be developed as a new Detention Facility (Jail), Court Complex, parking garage and/or County Courthouse.
