Request Summary (Agenda Caption):
title
Request by Pollution Control Services for approval to submit an application to the FD Foundation Kidsgardeningorg Inc. for grant funds in the amount of $15,529, with no required match, for the FY 2025 HCPCS Community Gardening Program.
end
Background and Discussion:
In January 2021, Executive Order 13985 was signed. This executive order aims to support underserved communities by addressing disproportionate and adverse health effects, environmental, climate-related, and other cumulative impacts on communities. HCPCS’s community gardening project will address several key components shared in Executive Order 13985. Environmental injustices are known to significantly affect underserved groups (e.g., people of color, low household income), resulting in adverse impacts on health and quality of life.
Expected Impact:
Harris County Pollution Control Services (HCPCS) plans to establish a community garden in four underserved communities, providing hands-on gardening education that centers on pollution-free gardening practices to school aged children, instilling a sense of ownership and control over their health and the health of their family members and communities.
Alternative Options:
Court could choose to not accept these grant funds which may cause a missed opportunity to educate Harris County residents on matters that directly impact their health, as well as address several components in Executive Order 13985 that serve to support marginalized communities.
Alignment with Goal(s):
_ Justice and Safety
_ Economic Opportunity
