Background and Discussion:

In 2023 2,611 people were killed in crashes that involved a teen driver age 15-18 years old.  According to a 2023 report prepared by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teen drivers have a higher rate of fatal crashes. Precinct 7 is located predominantly in low to moderate income areas of Harris County within the City of Houston. Teen drivers in poor neighborhoods face unique challenges that increase their risk of accidents. Lack of resources for traffic safety education and support can lead to a higher prevalence of risky driving behaviors among teens.

The grant funds will support Precinct 7 in hiring six experienced motorcycle deputies to patrol high schools and universities to enforce, pass out information and educate motorists in these target areas and a part time clerk to administer the program.

Expected Impact:

Teen drivers in poor neighborhoods face unique challenges that increase their risk of accidents. Lack of resources for traffic safety education and support can lead to a higher prevalence of risky driving behaviors among teens. This additional resource is expected to improve teen driving behavior to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
