Background and Discussion:

A Fox News report stated that the crime rate in Sunnyside has only risen in recent years. The crime rate in Sunnyside is 92 per 1,000 people, meaning residents have a 1 in 11 chance of being the victim of a crime. This neighborhood is in Precinct 7 and Precinct 7 has created the Victim Assistance Program to address this issue. Some of the most common violent crimes in the neighborhood are robbery, assault, and murder.

A domestic violence victim has immediate needs: emergency medical treatment, a place to stay, information and referral, a discussion of legal options, and cultural sensitivity on behalf of law enforcement and providers. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) provides protections for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking and is trained to address insecurities about seeking help. The grant funds support the Precinct 7 VAWA Deputy hired on this grant will continue to address victim issues.

Expected Impact:

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) provides protections for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking and is trained to address insecurities about seeking help. Constable Precinct 7 expects to reduce the number of crime victims who have not received assistance.
