Background and Discussion:

Harris County Public Health’s Mosquito and Vector Control Division (MVCD) is expanding its services to include diagnostic testing for pathogens found in mosquitoes, vectors, and reservoir samples. This initiative aims to support regional surveillance and response efforts by identifying vector-borne pathogens for external government, academic, and research entities.  As part of this initiative, MVCD will facilitate data sharing with participating organizations to promote transparency, enhance public health collaboration, and support integrated vector management strategies across different jurisdictions. The data generated from diagnostic testing will help inform vector control interventions, academic research, and public health decision-making.  To effectively manage the revenue generated from these services, the establishment of a dedicated fund is being requested. The funds collected will be used to sustain and enhance program operations, which include laboratory staffing, testing supplies, equipment maintenance, and the development of new testing capabilities to address evolving public health threats.

Expected Impact:

This fund will support the operations of the Mosquito and Vector Control Division (MVCD) and also provide resources for similar agencies that lack the capacity for comprehensive laboratory operations. The testing conducted will aid both local and statewide efforts in monitoring and mitigating public health risks associated with vector-borne diseases.
