Background and Discussion:

DAO is vacating 120,120 square feet at 500 Jefferson and moving employees back to locations in the downtown courthouse complex, including the Criminal Justice Center. The remaining employees are scheduled to move out of an additional 20,020 square feet at 500 Jefferson by the end of September when construction on DAO space at the Criminal Justice Center is finalized. This amendment consolidates the square footage of the lease and reduces the monthly rental cost incurred by Harris County.

 

Expected Impact:

This short-term extension will provide office space to the DAO employees while their move is finalized. This amendment saves the County $236,311.25 in monthly rent that would be due to the landlord if the agreement was not finalized.

 

Alternative Options:

If the amendment is not signed and DAO remains in the space the rent charged will be for the full 140,140 square feet at a cost of $270,070.
